As someone who has experienced Disney character interactions from both sides, I’ve gained a few skills that make meet and greets fun, magical and completely unforgettable! People on “the ‘gram” couldn’t get enough of this hilarious moment we shared with Edna from The Incredibles. If you want to learn how to create your own fun, memorable moments, keep reading!
Tip #1 For Magical, Memorable Disney Character Interactions:
REMEMBER: it’s not just a photo op!
Let’s be honest… there’s nothing special or memorable about walking up, smiling at the camera, then awkwardly saying goodbye. Disney Photo Pass snaps pictures through your entire interaction! So if you use tips 2 and 3, you’ll end up with countless adorable candid shots like the one below!
Like I said though – it isn’t only about the photos. An authentic, enjoyable interaction is what you and your family will actually remember about meeting the characters. Since photos are guaranteed, you can simply focus on connecting with the characters. Treat the experience like you would meeting anyone: show a genuine desire to spend time with them. It totally pays off because they’ll reciprocate the love tenfold, which is something you and your family will never forget!
Tip #2 For Magical, Memorable Disney Character Interactions:
TALK: a lot!
Especially with the characters who can’t talk back. The more you talk about, the more they have to react to! So while you’re waiting in line to meet them, be sure to do these 2 things:
- Warm up your chatter box.
- Think of a few details from the character’s storyline that you can draw on for inspiration in the convo.
For example:
- If you’re meeting Nick from Zootopia, you could tell him a new joke to share with Flash.
- If you run into Stitch, you could sing and dance to your favorite Elvis song.
- If you see Mr. Incredible, you could tell him about your superpower and invite him on a mission with you.
Tip #3 For Magical, Memorable Disney Character Interactions:
TAKE YOUR TIME!
Of course I don’t mean to move through the experience with complete disregard for those in line behind you. What I mean is – what we remember for years to come are the fun, joyful, spontaneous moments. If we rush through the interaction, we sacrifice the opportunity to have fun and create a lasting memory. You can create a memorable interaction in less than 30 seconds – and the people behind you rarely mind because they’re so entertained!
One interaction I’ll never forget is the time I bumped into Dr. Facilier in New Orlean’s Square at Disneyland! I asked him if his “friends on the other side” could help me with a little dilemma. Though hesitant to be so helpful – he is a villain after all – we worked through my “problem” together. While it certainly takes some improv skills to have meet and greets like this, (and charades skills with the characters who can’t talk back), I swear that if you follow these 3 tips, you’ll be creating Disney magic – not just for you and your family, but for everyone who witnesses your interactions!
To Recap:
- Do it for more than just the photos.
- Talk up a storm!
- Slow down and take advantage of the opportunity to spend time with these fun characters!
I hope these 3 tips help you create magical, memorable moments on your next Disney trip! In the meantime, it may be a good idea to play a few games of charades and brush up on your improv skills.
